CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, light-touch method of evaluating and enhancing the function of the craniosacral system - the physiological body system comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

The importance of the craniosacral system to continued good health
The craniosacral system is vital as it influences the development and performance of the brain and spinal cord, imbalance or restriction in this system could potentially cause any number of sensory, motor, or neurological distortions. These expressions could include chronic pain, eye difficulties, motor-coordination impairments, and other health challenges.

CST enhances the body’s natural healing processes to improve the operation of the central nervous system, dissipate the negative effects of stress, enhance health and strengthen resistance to disease. The method generally requires only five grams of pressure - the equivalent weight of about a nickel - to test for restrictions in various parts of the craniosacral system. Often the evaluation alone will help solve the presenting complaint.

How is CST performed?
Performed fully clothed, a session typically lasts between 60-90 minutes while in a reclining position on a massage table. Using touch, the practitioner evaluates the craniosacral system and assists in reducing restrictions as appropriate.

What are the benefits of receiving CranioSacral Therapy?
While the subtle manipulations engage the craniosacral system they also stimulate the functioning of the immune and parasympathetic nervous systems. It is shown that when these actions are accomplished, the results may benefit those experiencing:
Migraine headaches
Chronic neck and back pain
Traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries
Motor-coordination impairments
Stress and tension-related difficulties
Central nervous system disorders
Orthopedic difficulties
Scoliosis
Neurovascular or immune disorders
Postsurgical dysfunction
Chronic fatigue syndrome & fibromyalgia
Emotional difficulties
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ)

When is CST appropriate?
A CST session is ideal as an aid in the effort to cope effectively with stresses encountered in daily life as well as to address specific considerations. The process is designed to work in tandem with primary healthcare.

How often should a CST session be received?
The number and frequency of sessions received varies, yet a minimum series of three sessions is recommended. Maintenance sessions, if needed, should be at intervals of every two to four weeks.
